Sacraments of Initiation

Sacrament of Baptism

Baptism is the first sacrament of initiation. It frees us from original sin, makes us children of God, and incorporates us into the Church, the Body of Christ.

Baptism is necessary for salvation as Christ Himself affirmed: “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5).

Baptism has multiple spiritual effects:

  • Forgiveness of Sin: Cleanses original sin and personal sins.
  • New Birth: Makes the baptized a new creation in Christ.
  • Incorporation into the Church: Baptism brings unity with the Body of Christ.
  • Indelible Mark: Baptism imprints a spiritual mark on the soul, signifying belonging to Christ forever.

Children ages 7 and under may be baptized only at the request of the parents or legal guardians, who must promise to raise the child in the Catholic faith, typically by enrolling the child in a Catholic school or religious education program. Parents should contact the Parish Office to schedule a Baptism in English or Vietnamese.
