Sacrament of Confession

The Sacrament of Confession, also known as Reconciliation or Penance, is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). It is one of the Sacraments of Healing, offering the faithful the grace of forgiveness and restoration of communion with God and the Church.

The sacrament was instituted by Jesus Christ when He gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins:

“Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:22-23).

Reconciliation (Confession or Penance)

Purpose of the Sacrament

  • Reconciliation with God: Restores the grace lost through sin.
  • Reconciliation with the Church: Repairs the damage caused by sin to the community.

  • Confession: The act of admitting sins to a priest.

  • Absolution: The priest, acting in the person of Christ, grants forgiveness.

  • Penance: Acts of prayer, service, or sacrifice to repair the harm caused by sin.
