Catholic Black Ministry

Welcome to the Black Catholic Ministry!

One of the original Atlantic City parishes, Old St. Monica’s, was founded by Mother Emma Lewis (1869-1921) to minister to Catholics of African descent. This ministry continues as part of the citywide Parish of Saint Monica. It is led by Fr. Mohan, pastor, and the Black Catholic Leadership Ministry (BCLM).

Its annual signature event is the Mother Emma Lewis Awards Dinner.

Rooted in faith and inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the African American Catholic community, our ministry celebrates diversity and unity in Christ. We strive to foster spiritual growth, promote social justice, and build a strong sense of community within our parish and beyond.

Through prayer, worship, outreach, and fellowship, we honor our traditions while embracing the unique contributions of all members. Whether you are a lifelong parishioner or new to the faith, we invite you to join us in deepening your relationship with God and sharing His love with others.

Together, let us walk in faith, guided by the Holy Spirit, as we work to make a positive impact in Atlantic City and the world. All are welcome!

Our Core Values As Community

Rooted in the Catholic faith, we nurture a deep and vibrant spiritual life through prayer, worship, and the sacraments, guided by the Holy Spirit.

We honor and celebrate the rich traditions, history, and contributions of the African American Catholic community, fostering a deeper understanding of our unique identity within the universal Church.

Embracing diversity, we promote unity and inclusion within our parish and the broader community, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.

Inspired by the Gospel, we work for justice, equality, and the dignity of all people, addressing systemic issues and advocating for positive change in our community.

Guided by Christ’s example, we serve the needs of others, particularly the marginalized, through acts of charity, compassion, and love.
